About ‘Cork oaks and olive trees in Portugal’ by Adelheid Smitt

The Portuguese cork oak, the "sobreiro", is the national tree of Portugal and its felling is prohibited. Because of its Mediterranean climate, cork oaks already bloomed naturally in Portugal, especially in the Alentejo region. Cork is one of Portugal's biggest and most important exports. Currently, Portugal has 730 000 ha of cork oak forest (25% of the world) and is the main world producer of cork with more than 100 thousand tonnes produced per year.
On my first visit, I became very fascinated by the solitary cork oaks that seem to be scattered through the alentejo landscape. I therefore tried to photograph them in many ways.
