Simplicity simplistic and minimalist in black and white. Taken at Valkenburg Lake. The Valkenburg Lake is a recreational lake and sand extraction site near the Valkenburg core and the adjacent Valkenburg Air Base in the Dutch municipality of Katwijk. The lake was created in the 1950s by sand extraction for limestone for the construction industry. The National Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is located here where one can take a ride along the lake on a steam tram. The area has a recreational function for the region, including for the neighbouring Stevenshof, a district in the municipality of Leiden. Valkenburg Lake is also an important nature reserve. The lake and the surrounding meadows are an important habitat and stopping point for various species of ducks, geese, meadow birds and migratory birds, such as the topper, the Canada goose and the lapwing. In October, up to 1,000 lapwings sometimes gather on the voluntarily protected meadowland for migration south.
