Concrete Staircase with ‘Shadow’ and Terracotta by Danny van Eldik

This minimalist architectural image depicts a fascinating dialogue between robust brutalism and abstract geometry. An external concrete staircase rises in steps from the bottom left-hand corner, set against a monumental wall of formwork concrete. A sharp, dark shadow cuts powerfully across the wall diagonally, intersecting with the clean horizontal and vertical joints of the wall panels. A warm terracotta-red surface introduces an unexpectedly vibrant splash of colour into the otherwise industrial composition. The beauty of this work lies in the authentic material details: the grey concrete reveals a rich pattern of minute casting pores, anchor holes and weathered marks that bear witness to pure craftsmanship. The red colour block has a subtly mottled, chalk-like texture, which means it does not feel flat but instead gains depth. The interplay between the sharp shadow line and the striking colour block creates a dynamic rhythm that continues to captivate.

This artwork is a striking eye-catcher for lovers of modern architecture, the Bauhaus and minimalist design. It brings both warmth and industrial tranquillity to the wall. On matt aluminium (Alu-Dibond), the mineral character of the concrete is shown to its best advantage, whilst a framed photo print with a black frame beautifully accentuates the graphic contrast in the living room, study or a sleek entrance hall.
