Kijkduin near Den Helder, located in the village of Huisduinen, is a historic and picturesque coastal area on the North Sea. The most famous landmark is Fort Kijkduin, built in 1811 by order of Napoleon and now a museum with underground passages, military exhibitions and a North Sea aquarium. Nearby is the impressive Lange Jaap lighthouse, one of the tallest cast-iron lighthouses in the world, although it is not accessible due to danger of collapse. The dunes and views of Texel and the sandbank Razende Bol make the area popular with hikers, cyclists and lovers of nature and history.
