Cloud over the desert, surreal photography by Roger VDB

A beautiful work which shows a soft, large cumulus cloud against a deep, bright blue background in the sandy plain. By placing the cloud centrally in the frame, it appears strikingly large compared to the expanse of sky, creating a sense of overwhelming space and stillness. The scene exudes a serene, almost ethereal calm, as if it comes from another world.

The aesthetic of this shot echoes classic and contemporary photographers who emphasise the beauty of sky and nature. American photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, with great care for composition and light, often captured the same sense of timeless stillness, although Adams is better known for landscapes in black and white. Shooting this cloud in colour and with film evokes the atmosphere of Ektachrome works by Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, who transformed everyday scenes into poetic images with a keen eye for colour and subtle nuance.

Similar approaches can also be found in painting, for example by René Magritte, whose surrealist skies and floating objects evoke a similar emotional experience. The use of colour, light and space in this picture creates a balance between realism and dreamlike quality, making the work both illustrative and emotionally rich.

The combination of analogue film filter, digital tools, minimalist composition and subtle colour accents creates a timeless visual experience, inviting the viewer to contemplate and reflect on space, stillness and beauty.
