Cloister of Middelburg Abbey

by Sander Poppe

Middelburg Abbey had been on my list of places I wanted to photograph for a long time. As someone born in Middelburg, it felt almost natural to finally add this special place to my collection. Yet it took longer than planned before I was walking around here with my camera and tripod.

For this photograph, I chose a composition that focuses on the long cloister. The old stone floor, the centuries-old walls and the vaults draw the eye ever further into the frame. At the end of the corridor, a lamp is lit, whilst an open door offers a view of the inner courtyard. It was precisely this combination of light and architecture that caught my attention.

Whilst taking the photograph, I was particularly struck by how peaceful this place feels. Although the abbey is situated right in the centre of Middelburg, it feels as though the hustle and bustle of the city disappears completely here. The soft light emphasises the details of the historic masonry and subtly brings out the building’s rich history.

This photograph is not about vast landscapes or a distant horizon, but about space in a different way. The lines, the light and the architecture convey a sense of tranquillity and depth. As a result, this photograph is well suited to a home, office or public space where history, atmosphere and tranquillity are appreciated.
