About "Cityscape of Utrecht with red and white Dom tower, split-screen montage"

About the artwork

Because of the release of the new Domtoren book (from the makers of Bouwdomtoren), the tower was coloured red and white!

It is a very different tower from what everyone knows, the red-and-white Dom Tower. During the tower's first major restoration in 1519-1525, the lantern was cleaned with paint scrapers and then painted with over 2,000 kilos of lead white. In contrast, the back surfaces in the first squares were painted red. It is possible that the tower also looked like this in 1382 and was only repainted now. And for those who don't think of it so quickly: red and white are of course the colours of Saint Martin. This is a composite of two photos I took with exactly the same vantage point, taken at dusk on 9 March 2014. Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset. Most Dark Utrecht photos were shot at dusk. http://www.donkerutrecht.nl
