About "City of contrasts (DUO building, Saint Joseph Cathedral, Groningen)"

by Harmen van der Vaart

About the artwork

Groningen is a city of many contrasts. 25% of the population of Groningen is a student. This makes it the youngest city in the Netherlands. Yet the University of Groningen is one of the oldest (1614).
Apart from having some of the most beautiful old buildings, there's great modern architecture everywhere. In terms of policy, Groningen is a progressive and conservative city. New ideas such as the widely known traffic circulation plan go hand in hand with beautiful traditions such as Gronings Ontzet (Bommen Berend).

The church tower on the left in the background of this picture is in the village of Haren. From that church Bommen Berend looked out over the battlefield when he bombed Groningen in 1672. His efforts were fortunately in vain.
