Catherine of Alexandria ('Saint Catherine, the great martyr') († 25 November 307) is among the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. Her name is derived from the Greek word katharos meaning "pure" or "pure". Throughout history, her originally Greek biography (c. 6th century) has become very intertwined with folk tales and new legends. Catherine is one of the 14 distress helpers. She is invoked as a protector against plague and to guard chastity. She is also sometimes seen as a protector during childbirth.
John the Baptist (c. 7 BC - c. 30, but certainly before 36 AD) is a prophet within Christianity, Mandeism and Islam. In Eastern Orthodoxy, he is called Johannes Prodromos, John the Predecessor, and was the nephew of Jesus Christ.

His work is characterised by a refined technique, many details (especially also in the landscapes in the background of many of his works) and an intense use of colour, with great attention to atmosphere.
