About "Church in Progress"

by Roman Robroek - Photos of Abandoned Buildings

About the artwork

The original church dates back to the 15th century. After many repairs the church got intentionally destroyed to be rebuilt into a new church in the end of the 19th century. Building, decorating and painting took over 50 years. Right after the 2nd World War cracks started to appear in this church. Around the 80's in the 20th century the decision was made to close the church after it had barely been used. In 2009, after a big collection of signatures for saving the church, a project launched to restore it to its former glory. It's still a very long way to go. The last project meeting seems to have taken place in 2013.

The church is located almost 900m high on a big hill. Driving to it took a long while due to the bad and dangerous road. Once on top there was a tiny town with only a few houses. Such an impressive scenery. I enjoyed the view and the surrounding for quite some time. It was truly a unique experience.
