The iconic Castle Hohenzollern in Baden-Württemberg at sunrise in southern Germany, located at the top of the 855-metre-high Mount Zollern.
The castle towers majestically above a blanket of forests and mist, making for spectacular views of the surrounding area. The pink and orange hues of the sky contrast beautifully with the warm stone walls of the castle and the rich autumn colours of the surrounding hills. It is a true 'fairytale castle' but with a deeper historical connection.
Hohenzollern, is the third castle on this historic site. The original castle dated from the 11th century, but was destroyed in 1423 after a long siege. A 2nd castle was built in the 15th century, but fell into disrepair in the 18th century and remained as a ruin in the early 19th century. The current castle was rebuilt between 1850 and 1867 by order of the romantic-minded Prussian crown prince's later king Frederick William IV. Since then, it served mainly ceremonial function and as a family monument. Today, Hohenzollern Castle is still privately owned by the Hohenzollern family and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who come to see its magnificent architecture, historic halls and art collection, including the Prussian king's crown.
