Carvoeiro in Black and White, Portugal by Henk Meijer Photography

A black-and-white photograph in 16:9 format of a sunset overlooking Carvoeiro and the picturesque Praia de Carvoeiro, situated in a bay in the Algarve.

The composition captures the terraced white houses and rugged cliffs of the village in a refined monochrome colour palette, emphasising structure, contrast and texture.

The sky, originally filled with sunset colours, is rendered in a rich range of grey tones, with layered clouds adding depth and atmosphere.

The fading light creates strong contrasts between light and shadow, accentuating the contours of the cliffs and the geometry of the architecture.

The ocean below appears calm with soft colour transitions, reflecting the sky in subtle gradations. Without the distraction of colour, the scene becomes more graphic and expressive, with the focus on form, light and composition. The result is a classic and atmospheric coastal photograph that captures the character and charm of Carvoeiro in a refined black-and-white style.
