About "Captive freedom - Colourful bird behind bars in the former sanatorium"

by Infinite Decay

About the artwork

The picture shows a colourful graffiti of a bird sprayed in vivid tones on the weathered wall of the former sanatorium. The vibrant colours of the bird - green, blue, yellow and orange - contrast strongly with the pale and peeling wall behind it. The scene is dominated by bars in the foreground, which act as a symbolic border and restrict the bird's freedom. This motif is reminiscent of the history of the sanatorium, which once served as a lung sanatorium for miners and was later used as a military hospital during the Second World War.

Over the years, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. Today, the graffiti is a luminous but imprisoned expression of life and hope in a space characterised by the past and decay. The bars symbolise lack of freedom, while the colourful bird stands for hope and freedom. The image invites us to reflect on lost time and the stories of the people who once hoped for healing here.
