This panoramic composition presents the Aelbrechtskolk canal in Rotterdam, shown as a colourful fragment of historic urban architecture by the water. In the centre of the image appears a rhythmic row of tall, narrow houses in intense shades of red, orange, pink, yellow, white and dark blue. On the right, the composition is closed by a larger building with a red roof and an arched passage above the water, giving the scene a distinctive architectural accent. The canal in the foreground reflects the colours of the façades, sky and greenery, creating a luminous and dynamic surface. The turquoise sky, trees at the sides and free lines running through the whole composition strengthen the feeling of movement, light and urban energy.
This work is a digital graphic adaptation created by Mathias based on photographic documentation of his original acrylic painting. The proportions of the panoramic format, the intensity of colour, the arrangement of the façades and the artist’s recognizable expressive linework have been preserved. The digital treatment gives the image greater clarity and allows the contrasts, architectural details and reflections in the water to stand out more strongly in a contemporary work presented by Kleine Atelier.
The inspiration for this image is Rotterdam seen from its older, more intimate urban fabric — a place where the canal, historic buildings and light on the water create an atmosphere different from the modern metropolitan image of Rotterdam. Mathias does not show Aelbrechtskolk as a cold architectural record, but as a vivid memory of a place where façades, bridges, water and colour together build a personal portrait of a Dutch city.
The original work was painted by Mathias in acrylic on canvas. The artist interprets reality by intensifying colours, simplifying details and leading the lines dynamically through the composition. As a result, the buildings along the canal gain a more expressive, painterly character. Rather than reproducing the view literally, Mathias brings out the rhythm of the façades, the play of reflections and the energy of light.
As wall decoration, this panorama of Rotterdam brings colour, space and the distinctive atmosphere of a Dutch city by the water into an interior. It works well in a living room, dining room, hallway, studio or office, especially where an image is needed that combines architecture, urban character and a bright intensity of colour.
