About the artwork

Fluttering butterflies. Who doesn't get happy? I do. Well-known butterflies are day peacock, hackled aurelia, atlas butterfly, death's-head butterfly, hummingbird butterfly, monarch butterfly and swallowtail butterfly. An old Dutch name for a butterfly is kapel, the origin of which is said to lie in the piece of Saint Martin's cloak kept as a relic. Even in contemporary butterfly names, reference to cloaks can still be found, as in emperor's mantle and mourning mantle Butterflies differ greatly in size; the smallest species have a wingspan of a few millimetres and the largest species can reach a wingspan of more than 25 centimetres. Butterflies, like other insects, have a distinctly split life cycle. As larvae (caterpillar), they have only one goal and that is to eat as much as possible to become adults as quickly as possible. Adult butterflies, however, focus entirely on reproduction; some species have highly degenerated mouthparts and no longer take in food. Females need to be able to detect food plants in addition to food to deposit eggs. Therefore, it is usually the females that lure the males so that females can focus their energy on finding the food for the larvae. This is ultimately better for the male too as it increases the chances of a successful offspring.
