About "Burn scars, Pico del Teide"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

A sad monument to past vitality rises up against the bright blue of the sky: a burnt Canary Island pine, its skeleton of former branches and twigs black and bare. It was once a majestic conifer that reached deep into the earth and proudly stretched its green needles towards the sky. But now it stands only as a silent witness to a fire that has extinguished its splendour. The branches, charred black, reach towards the sky as if they were calling for redemption in silent despair.
The scene seems almost surreal. In the background rises the Pico del Teide, majestic and motionless, an eternal giant that has survived the changes in its surroundings for centuries. It stands in contrast to the fragile, almost broken form of the tree, which remains here as a memorial in the landscape. The branches of the pine tree draw sharp lines against the blue that no longer reaches them - a dramatic sight that reminds us of transience.
The burnt pine seems to remind us that even the strongest and most beautiful things in nature are fragile. Yet there is a quiet strength in its stillness and continued existence that makes us reflect and calls us to respect the cycles of life in their fragility and strength.
