Brúarárfoss literally means bridge river waterfall. In former times, there was a natural bridge at the level of the waterfall. The story goes that a servant of the diocese in Skálholt destroyed it in 1602 when there was a great famine in Iceland. He wanted to prevent travellers who came to Skálholt to beg for food from going this way.
