Svartifoss ('black waterfall') is a beautiful waterfall, 20 metres high, surrounded by columns of black basalt. It is located in Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull national park.
The basalt columns were created because lava was allowed to cool very slowly, allowing the molten rock to crystallise.
These forms of basalt have inspired some Icelandic architects in their design, which can be seen in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, the church in Akureyri and the National Theatre building in Reykjavík.
