Wave breakers on Domburg beach in the Netherlands.
Pile heads are taken for granted in Zeeland. Beaches are unthinkable without the single or double rows of piles. They are breakwaters to prevent erosion of beach, dune bar or riverbank. On the North Sea coast of Walcheren and Schouwen, it is estimated that there are nearly one hundred thousand piles. Because of the ebb and flow of the tide, the water flows along the coast with great force, and without the pile heads, the beach would erode. And once the beach would be up, the dune would begin to erode.
Why does Zeeland choose to protect its coast with wooden piles instead of stones? The answer lies in the difference between high and low tide. This is because it is so great that the same effect would require far too many stones.
As a photographer, I love to capture the endlessness and details of Dutch nature in strong photo images. By using different techniques and combining them with perspective and composition, I create the own dynamics that are often recognizable in my photography work. With my photographs I try to capture a momentum in time where you almost seem to be able to touch the image and the atmosphere is almost tangible.
