The Gasselterveld and its, more famous, smaller variant, 't Nije Hemelriek. Two swimming pools on the edge of Forestry Gieten-Borger. Until 2013, sand was excavated here, creating a pit 50 metres deep. When excavation stopped, the excavation filled with water, coloured azure by the white sandy bottom. Since 2017, the Gasselterveld has been a swimming lake with an official recreational section to the north.
Walking around the Gasselterveld is like walking along an Italian lake. The blue water, white sand and green trees make it a unique place in the Netherlands.
I took these photos during an 11-kilometre walk around the water and through Boswachterij Gieten-Borger. A beautiful sunny day in early spring 2024.
