The black-tailed godwit is a migratory bird that starts entering the Netherlands in late February, early March. By July, most have already left. Black-tailed godwits spend the winter in West Africa, where they stay in large groups near estuaries with mud banks. In Africa, they largely switch to vegetarian food. There, they mainly forage on rice left on traditionally managed rice fields. With some imagination, the courtship call of the black-tailed godwit sounds like utto utto utto, which it calls in quick succession. This call gives the godwit its name.
