The bishop's stork (Ciconia episcopus), also known as the woolly stork, is a bird from the family of storks. His name is a reference to his black and white plumage reminiscent of the clothing of clergymen.
The following three subspecies occur:[1]
Asian bishop's stork (C. e. episcopus) - (Bodaert, 1783); occurs in India, Indochina and the Philippines
African Episcopal Tree (C. e. microscelis) - G.R. Gray, 1848; occurs in tropical Africa
Ciconia episcopus neglecta - (Finsch, 1904); occurs on several islands in Indonesia, such as Java and Celebes
BirdLife International considers the Asian and African subspecies as separate species. The Asian species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, while the African subspecies is not threatened.
