The "Schillerbrunnen" is a monument to the poet Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805). It stands in a central location on Gendarmenmarkt, in front of the flight of steps leading to the former Royal Playhouse, now the Berlin Concert Hall.
Over octagonal ground plan, surrounded by a wrought-iron lattice oriented to Renaissance and early Baroque forms, stands on six-tiered lower base of gray mottled marble, in the further structure of white Carrara marble worked monument. The pedestal, equipped with an optional fountain function, four water basins and four lion head water spouts, is surrounded by four female allegorical seated figures, namely "Poetry" (front left), "Drama" (front right), "Philosophy" (back left) and "History" (back right). The two rectangular reliefs on the sides show "Schiller's Consecration as a Poet" and "Schiller's Admission to Olympus". The poet himself stands in the form of a statue on the base.
