The collaboration with the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff was unsuccessful because Frederik did not want stairs to access the terrace. Knobelsdorff thought that the palace should stand on a pedestal, so that it would stand out better from the park. Jan Bouman, an architect of Dutch origin, took over the management of the project.
