Bayonne has always been my kind of town - anywhere with a history of delicious smoked ham and handmade chocolate immediately puts me in a good mood. But this unique city in the southwest corner of Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a winner in many other ways as well, and proudly bears the label Ville d'Art et d'Histoire. Part Gascon, part Basque, Bayonne lies at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, a short distance from the sands and surf of the Atlantic coast in the Pyrénées-Atlantique department. Part of the ancient region of Gascony, Bayonne is also considered the capital of French Basque Country, an unofficial country with no official borders bordering the Pyrenees with three Basque provinces in France and four larger provinces in Spain.
