Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 2566 | James Webb Space Telescope by Deep Field

Explore NGC 2566, a striking spiral galaxy captured in remarkable detail by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Located around 76 million light-years away in the constellation Puppis, NGC 2566 features clearly defined spiral arms, a long central bar, and intricate clouds of gas, dust and stars.

This Webb image combines observations from NIRCam and MIRI, revealing different components of the galaxy. Near-infrared light from NIRCam brings its stars into sharp view, including young stars hidden within clouds of gas, while MIRI highlights the galaxy’s warm interstellar dust and complex molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

NGC 2566 is part of a Webb programme studying 55 nearby star-forming galaxies, helping astronomers investigate how stars, gas and dust interact. Combined with observations from Hubble and ALMA, Webb’s data provide a deeper view of the star-formation process across the nearby Universe.

The image is presented with a scientific information layer that adds context to the astronomical object, including its name, classification, distance from Earth, constellation, field of view, and the filters used to create the image. The filter information is visualized with colours according to the JWST naming convention for their bands.
