Bangkok’s glowing heart at night

by Walter G. Allgöwer

As night falls over Bangkok and the clamour of this metropolis slowly fades into a distant murmur, Wat Phra Kaew begins to take on a different aura. Golden chedis, delicate prangs and the artfully curved roofs of the Grand Palace rise out of the darkness like precious memories from a bygone era.
The beams of the spotlights refract off gilded surfaces and colourful mosaics, as if countless stars were descending upon the earth. A solemn tranquillity hangs over the temple towers, contrasting with the restless energy of Bangkok. At this moment, time seems to stand still.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the heart of Thai spirituality, guards its secrets behind luminous walls and shimmering roofs. Each tower seems to point towards the heavens; each spire tells a story of faith, devotion and the deep connection between humankind and the universe. The warm gold of the structures meets the deep blue of the tropical night, creating a backdrop of almost unreal beauty.
Even the trees in the foreground and the small lights along the walls appear as silent guardians of this sacred place. Viewed from the north-east, the entire complex appears like a glowing treasure, nestled in the heart of Thailand.
Thus, at night, Wat Phra Kaew stands before the observer not only as an architectural masterpiece, but as a symbol of enduring strength, dignity and that timeless magic inherent in certain places, which allows the soul to find peace for a moment.
