While cooking, it suddenly occurred to me: a pumpkin is a bit like a womb! I cut out a picture of a foetus from a sheet of paper and put it in the pumpkin on the kitchen counter. In the foreground you can quite deliberately see the cutting board with pumpkin seeds and a bottle of olive oil near a simple rental kitchen with a gas connection.
This image was created during my Photography studies at the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague), where I graduated Cum Laude in 2009.
The photo is part of the project "Handleiding tot een speelser leven," which aimed to portray playfulness, light-heartedness, acceptance and beautiful coincidence. Less perfection, striving and planning. Because that's where we all... Or let me speak for myself: because I really do need that from time to time, as a change from all the usefulness, responsibility and seriousness.
This photo (as part of the photo series) has been nominated for several awards, and has been exhibited at the Nederlands Fotomuseum (Rotterdam), the Amsterdams Centrum voor Fotografie, Designhuis Eindhoven, Kunstmuseum (The Hague), Above Second Gallery (Hong Kong), Little Mountain Gallery (Canada), Breda Photo International photo festival and the Shanghai Biennale 2010, among others.
