The Azure Window on the Maltese island of Gozo was one of the country's most famous landmarks. The imposing natural limestone arch rises majestically from the sea and offers a fascinating panorama that attracts visitors from all over the world. Especially when the sun was shining, the colours of the water glowed in intense shades of blue and turquoise, contrasting sharply with the warm beige of the rock.
Not far away is Fungus Rock, a mighty boulder in the sea that was famous in the past for a special medicinal plant. The Dwerja Salt Lake, which is connected to the open sea by a small opening, is also in the immediate vicinity, creating an attractive natural phenomenon.
The Azure Window was not only a popular photo motif, but also a backdrop for international film productions. Although the arch collapsed in 2017 due to strong storms, it remains in images, memories and stories as a symbol of the rugged beauty of Gozo. This photo documents the majestic sight of the rock arch at a time when it was still in its full splendour.
