Aurora above the Black Wooden Church by Judith Kuhn

This image captures a magical moment in the rugged expanse of Iceland: a simple, black church stands serenely in the darkness, its warmly glowing windows forming an inviting contrast to the cool night. Above it, an intense green aurora unfolds, dancing across the sky in soft, flowing veils. The movement of the light seems almost alive, lending the scene a mysterious dynamism, whilst the church serves as a quiet, grounded focal point.

The inspiration for this work stems from the encounter between the forces of nature and human security. The Northern Lights symbolise the incomprehensible and the mystical, whilst the illuminated church conveys warmth, protection and familiarity. This juxtaposition creates a special tension and, at the same time, a deep harmony.

The atmosphere is both awe-inspiring and soothing. The image invites us to feel small in the face of nature’s grandeur – and at the same time to find comfort in the small sources of light in life. The clear composition and the interplay of darkness and bright colours reinforce this effect.

Carefully directed lighting and strong contrasts create an intense sense of depth. As a wall hanging, this motif becomes an expressive highlight that lends every room a mystical, almost spiritual touch and immediately draws the eye.
