About "Atlantis"

by Jeroen de Jongh Photography

About the artwork

Mankind has been repeatedly threatened with total destruction over the course of time. Perhaps the most famous example is the city of Atlantis, according to the title of the work of art by artist duo Utskottet.

This mythical tale was first described by the Greek philosopher and writer Plato (427-347 B.C.) and tells the story of an island kingdom that fell victim to a series of natural disasters. After a series of devastating earthquakes and tidal waves, the city of Atlantis suddenly disappeared below sea level. Utskottet fears the repetition of this doomsday scenario.

With the image of a sinking or flooded city, Utskottet wants to show that this ominous sight can become raw reality. Rising sea levels and the increase in extreme weather are consequences of our reckless dealings with the earth, and if we don't watch out, your hometown could be flooded. But although the news and media often remind us enough of the climate crisis, it doesn't seem to get through to us enough.

Utskottet drew inspiration for the skyscrapers from all over the world. If you look closely, you'll recognize some well-known buildings in the skyline; for example, the New York Empire State Building or, closer to home, Amsterdam's A'dam Tower. Utskottet chose buildings from different cities to form a global cityscape - because the threat of total destruction affects us all.
