About "Arent van Bolten - Grotesque figure (c. 1573-1600)"

by Hernâni Fernandes Tavares e Sousa

About the artwork

This print is from the fascinating series "Grotesques" by Arent van Bolten, a Dutch sculptor, draughtsman and goldsmith of the late 16th century. His grotesques - bizarre creatures, half animal, half human, half ornament - are a feast of imagination and visual excess. Originally intended as designs for ornaments, furniture or metal work, they are in themselves small works of art full of expression, rhythm and absurdism.

Van Bolten's style fits perfectly into the Mannerist tradition, in which the unexpected, whimsical and elegant come together. Each figure seems to move, dance or even whisper: a theatrical ode to creativity without a brake.

Why this work is special:
- Rare example of Dutch mannerist grotesques.
- Ideal for lovers of fantasy, ornament and strangeness.
- Fits perfectly into interiors with a nod to art history and humour.
