About the artwork

John H. "Judge" Androctonus

John H. "Judge" Androctonus was a stern judge in Northfield, Minnesota, from 1874 to 1880. John H. had Greek ancestors who had left early for the promised land. Son John H. (from a family of eight children) was the only one who went to college and eventually became a judge in Minnesota. That time was characterised by wild outlaws who made the area unsafe. In this area, for example, the notorious Younger brothers from the James-Younger gang, led by Jesse and Frank James, operated. In 1876, they tried to rob the First National Bank of Northfield. This robbery failed because John H. Androctonus got wind of their plans and notified the sheriff in time. Cole, Jim and Bob Younger were arrested after a two-week chase and appeared in Judge Androctonus' court. During the trial, the brothers had no chance against the rock-hard Judge Androctonus and were given harsh sentences, losing their reputation as outlaws and restoring safety to Northfield. Since then, John H. "Judge" Androctonus was looked down upon in Northfield. However, he died of tuberculosis at the relatively young age of 45. Today, his grave is still visited and in 1910 he posthumously received the Carnegie Hero Fund medal.
