About ‘An English man-of-war by Willem van de Velde the Younger’
The Dutch painter Willem van der Velde the Younger was born in Leiden in 1633. Willem was the son of the father of the same name, who was also a marine painter. The Van der Velde family settled in Amsterdam in 1636.
The sea pieces by Willem van der Velde are very detailed and are special because of their colour and light effects. In his naval battles he showed the viewer a piece of history at sea. Moreover, he made the importance of shipping a wonderful spectacle.
