The Skinny Bridge is the most famous bridge over the Amstel River in Amsterdam.
The bridge dates from the 17th century and was originally called the Kerkstraatbrug (after the street leading from the centre onto the Amstel).
It is a drawbridge used only for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge is close to the Carré theatre; during the 5 May concert on the Amstel, the bridge is used as a grandstand for interested parties. The King and Queen always pass under the bridge after the concert, waving to the audience.
The photo shows both retractable wooden bridge sections, with the typical Amsterdam canal houses along the Amstel in the background.
