Amsterdam cityscape with houses on Herengracht and the old Haarlemmersluis, Jan van der Heyden, c. 1670 Van der Heyden depicted the atmosphere of activity on and around the water in Amsterdam's old city centre. With an eye for detail, he painted the old Haarlemmersluis on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal on the right. But the painting does not show an existing location. Van der Heyden combined the lock with a row of houses that actually stand on the Herengracht. Rijksmuseum Rights: CC0
