About the artwork

The river along which it all began some 900 years ago with a village of fishermen and farmers. Where a dam was laid in the river with the salt water with the harbour on one side and the merchants' houses and the money earned from the dam on the other. The trade that would make Amsterdam great and the centre of trade in Europe for a century. Much has happened and much has changed since then, but along the canals still stand the houses from the 17th century that show that Amsterdam was a world city with a global population from all corners of the world. These houses also testify to the self-confidence of the time. A communal culture rooted in Protestantism but with its own individual interpretation and, above all, space for the other. A lot has happened in those centuries, but the houses along the river still bear witness to the spirit of the city of Amsterdam.
