About ‘Among the greats – half-timbered houses in Esslingen’ by Jürgen Haug

Not every house in Esslingen's old town seeks the limelight. Some simply stand there – calm, clearly structured, almost graphic in their design – and that is precisely what makes them so appealing. The regular half-timbered structure with its neatly framed parapet panels and warm ochre tones almost looks like a drawing made of wood and plaster. The brightly framed windows add accents without disturbing the balance of the façade. It is not ornamentation that dominates here, but proportion. In combination with the cobblestones and the closely spaced neighbouring houses, a familiar cityscape emerges – one that does not seek to impress, but has grown over time. Perhaps it is precisely these quieter houses that define the character of Esslingen.
