Amethyst fungus in the autumn sun – Mystical forest colours by Fotografiecor .nl

This macro photograph focuses on the almost surreal colour of the amethyst mushroom (Laccaria amethystina). The deep, violet hues of the ‘red cabbage mushroom’ contrast beautifully with the warm, earthy tones of the old beech forest. The image was captured at a moment when the low autumn sun illuminated the mushroom, bringing out the gills and the texture of the cap. The result is an atmospheric and intimate portrait of a rare, fleeting moment in the forest, just before the autumn leaves completely cover the ground.

The amethyst fungus is a personal favourite, but finding them is a race against time. As soon as the beech trees shed their leaves en masse, these little gems literally vanish from view. Capturing this fungus in the final rays of a beautiful autumn afternoon therefore felt like a victory. As a photographer in our region, I know the spots where they shine, and this shot is an ode to that brief, magical period in autumn when the forest is at its most colourful.

With its unique, vibrant shades of purple and violet, this piece makes a bold and stylish addition to a modern or artistic interior. The artwork looks stunning in spaces with natural wood tones or shades of grey, where the colour of the fungus can take centre stage. For the best possible presentation, I recommend a print on brushed aluminium for a contemporary look, or fine art paper with a subtle texture for a more classic feel.
