Ameryllis or Hippeastrum is a genus of bulbous plants in the daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae), The genus includes about 70 to 75 species and more than 600 hybrids and cultivars. The species occur naturally in the (sub)tropical regions from Mexico and the Caribbean to the north in Argentina. Some species and hybrids are commonly cultivated for their large, striking flowers. These plants are popularly known as Amaryllis, but that is the name of another genus in the same family from Africa.
