Amalfi is located in the middle of the Amalfi Coast and is a popular holiday resort in southern Italy. It is a town in the Italian region of Campania and the capital of the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast owes its name to this pretty town. The medieval watchtower Torre Saracena towers majestically high above the sea at the entrance to Amalfi. Today, the tower houses a popular restaurant.
The Amalfi Coast, known as the Costiera amalfitana or Costa d'Amalfi in Italian, is located on the west coast of Italy around 40 kilometres south of Naples. The Amalfi Coast is a good 40 kilometres of rugged and jagged coastline on the Italian Gulf of Salerno in the south of the Sorrento Peninsula in the Campania region. With its steep cliffs, rugged coastline with many small beaches and pastel-coloured fishing villages, the region is a popular holiday destination. The most famous towns on the Amalfi Coast are Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. The stretch of coast between Positano and Vietri sul Mare has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
