About the artwork
On the way back from Chefchaouen to Tétouan along the N2, I was stunned by the architecture and cars driving by. In Africa, cars really do find a second life. So did my now favourite 1980 Mercedes Benz T2 609D. Also known as the ' Düsseldorfer Transporter ' and Also an ideal camper model.
In fact, from a recent dutch news article, publish by NRC '' Rust, a broken bumper or a broken windscreen - in Morocco, European camper vans get a second life '' by Rens Nijholt ( 28-03-2025) There is such a similar type of Mercedes Benz van! they may be refurbished in Aourir, but hey, they have to get there anyway!
The romance of exploring and facing the unknown adventure is truly a fantastic addictive activity.
It strongly reminded me of the story of Peter Teggelaar and Marc Gilsing who drove across Africa in 1993 with nothing more than a Peugeot 505 and unfortunately could not recreate it. Despite the tragic ending of the book: ''Heroic action in the Sahara'', that youthful, headstrong approach of the adventurers moved me.
The nondescript village I rode through for the 2nd time on the 2nd solo day through north Africa gave a little extra touch of empathy in the tragic, yet inspiring story of the two men who are the same age.
The mood I want to create with this photo is adventure, unfamiliarity, Arabic and retro.
