Queen Dido of Tyre or Elissa/Elyssa is one of the main characters in Virgil's Aeneid and, according to legend, the founder of Carthage.
The name Dido is possibly Semitic (and then means 'beloved'). Dido is then synonymous with the Carthaginian goddess Tanit.
The story goes that Dido had once fled from her homeland, Tyre.
Dido erected a pyre after her husband's departure with items that reminded her of him. After this, she committed suicide by stabbing herself.
