Around 1900, a fortified landing stage was built on a side arm of the Saaler Bodden for the local fishermen and for the ferry boat to Ribnitz-Damgarten. From here, the fishermen from Ahrenshoop, Alt and Niehagen went out with their Zeesboote to fish on the Saaler Bodden.
Increasingly, the harbor developed into an important traffic point for the connection between Ribnitz-Damgarten and Ahrenshoop, because a fixed road connection to the present-day district of Niehagen was not built until 1929.
Today, the harbor is used exclusively for tourism. After a comprehensive repair of the shore fortifications and a jetty for passenger ships, the harbor enjoys great popularity as a resting place for water hikers.
The harbor is home to passenger ships, local Zeesen and fishing boats, and a fish restaurant with its own smokehouse.
