About the artwork
In the early 1980s, Jan Keteleer immigrated to Spain as a stowaway from Belgium. He settled in Benalmadena, and began painting abstract landscapes. Some of his work was bought by the Sidney Janis Gallery. Although he remained out of touch with the pop art movement, he had a cynical view of his fellow artists.
Jan Keteleer studied art at the Academy of Art in Antwerp, where he took formal training in applied art as well as fine arts. However, he had little time to study. He took up sculpture during his mid-twenties, and his first statue was created in 1979. During this period, he also became active in the international abstract expressionist movement.
Jan Keteleer was an innovator of abstraction. His paintings evoke the changing elements of nature. In addition to his own work, he surrounded himself with works of art and developed a unique technique for creating abstract paintings. In addition to covering his canvas with lead white, he sanded its supports to give it a brighter appearance. Jan Keteleer often blended oils with kerosene, safflower oil, and water to achieve the desired consistency.
