Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.

About ‘Above Etiquette: Freedom in Faux Fur’ by Dirk Lahuis

The stately mansions in this neighbourhood exude an atmosphere of history, order and decorum. These are streets where the rules are usually quietly observed behind tall, gleaming windows. But high above the pavement, balancing on the edge of a wrought-iron balcony, she breaks with expectation.

It is a crisp day; the cold hangs sharply in the air and would cause anyone else to shiver. Yet the temperature does not seem to bother her. Wrapped in nothing but a voluminous faux-fur coat, she forms a soft, warm island in a setting of hard stone and chilly wind. The coat is not only protection here; it functions as a costume of luxury and disregard for the norm.

In her hand rests a cigarette, its smoke curling slowly and erratically upwards and disappearing into the grey sky. In the current climate, this may be a controversial image, but here it feels like a deliberate exclamation mark behind her presence. Is it a symbol of her independence? A moment of pure, undisturbed rebellion?

Her gaze betrays nothing except rock-solid self-confidence. She does not look down fearfully at the depths, but straight ahead. She is not sitting there to be seen, but simply because she claims that space. Fearless, stylish and completely sovereign.

My passion for photography started early, around 1970. In the era of analogue photography, I bought a second-hand Agfa Iso Rapid Ic from my savings. Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
