In the drawing you see the St. Catherine's Church in Ulestraten, a village where I lived during my adolescent years. As a 'Catholic girl' I should probably be ashamed, but I know especially well the outside of the church. The inside of the café 'De Notenbalk' across the street, I know much better. The large hall behind this café was often used for fun parties and once I even took dancing lessons there. And of course, during the carnival days the hall of the café was 'the place to be'. But fair is fair, the parish has a longer -and probably more fascinating- history than a café and that always appeals to me.
Karen Nijst has lived in and near her beloved hometown of Maastricht for many years. She currently works as a web developer (Kahlo Websites in Hapert, Brabant) and is responsible for both programming and graphic design .
