A tray of strawberries on a stone plinth, Adriaen Coorte, 1696 oil on paper on panel, h 28.9cm × w 22.3cm.
Coorte portrayed fruits with the precision of a natural scientist. He isolated them in such a way that it seems he wanted to fathom the essence of a peach or a gooseberry. These four paintings were not painted as a series, but have formed an ensemble since the second half of the 18th century.
