A tireless honeybee on a pink anemone by Adje Photography

At first glance, it might seem as though this honeybee is simply taking a moment’s rest amongst the soft, pink petals of the anemone. But nothing could be further from the truth. Whilst I was taking this macro photograph, she was actually incredibly busy collecting nectar and pollen. She flew from flower to flower, darting between the pistils at lightning speed, always on the lookout for the next spot full of nectar.

The pollen on her little body clearly shows just how hard she was working. It’s precisely that tiny detail that I find so special about macro photography: up close, you discover a world full of movement, colour and details that you would easily miss with the naked eye.

What’s more, taking this photo was a real challenge. There was a strong wind, causing the anemone to sway constantly from side to side. Whilst the honeybee itself was anything but still, it was a matter of patience, timing and a great deal of trial and error to capture that one sharp moment.

For me, therefore, this photograph tells more than just the story of a honeybee on a beautiful flower. It is a fleeting moment full of action, captured in an image that, paradoxically, radiates calm and gentleness. The combination of the fresh pink of the anemone, the fine details of the honeybee and the visible pollen makes this photograph a colourful and vibrant portrait of nature It makes a lovely focal point in the living room, bedroom or workspace, especially in a larger format where all the details and the honeybee really come to life.
