The white horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a tree native to the northern hemisphere. The tree originally grew in southern Europe and the Middle East but was introduced to northern Europe in the 16th century where it became popular as an ornamental tree. Unlike the common chestnut tree, the fruits are not edible. Horses can eat them, however, which is why that name came about. The horse chestnut usually has white flowers but there are also areas where they have pink flowers. The flowers grow like candles on the branches and give the tree a very pretty appearance in spring or early summer.
